The new Past Global Changes Magazine, titled "Ocean Circulation and Carbon Cycling" is now available to read and download.

Guest edited by Julia Gottschalk, Xu Zhang and Andrea Burke, this issue highlights the paleoceanographic proxies and Earth system modeling studies used to reconstruct and understand changes in these processes over a range of climate states, and the recent progress and ongoing challenges in reconstructing these changes, with an aim to inspire further research.

It is a contribution to the PAGES OC3 working group.

Drying in European peatlands

Details
Published: Wednesday, 23 October 2019 11:59

c peat nat geos oct 19A new contribution to the PAGES C-PEAT working group analyzes testate amoeba-derived hydrological reconstructions from 31 peatlands across Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Continental Europe to examine changes in peatland surface wetness during the last 2,000 years.

"Widespread drying of European peatlands in recent centuries", written by Graeme Swindles et al. and published in Nature Geoscience, shows that European peatlands have undergone substantial, widespread drying during the last ~300 years.

This marked recent transition in the hydrology of European peatlands is concurrent with compound pressures including climatic drying, warming and direct human impacts on peatlands, although these factors vary among regions and individual sites. Read the paper here.

ACME WG survey - 15 Nov

Details
Published: Monday, 21 October 2019 17:36

ACMEThe recently formed Arctic Cryosphere Change and Coastal Marine Ecosystems (ACME) working group is collecting community perspectives on the current state and future directions of Arctic coastal paleoceanography via an online survey.

ACME strongly encourages community members and paleoceanographers of all career stages and backgrounds to respond to the short questionnaire by 15 November.

The results of the survey will provide a basis for outlining priority research questions and directions, and give an overview of spatial, methodological, and ecological knowledge gaps identified by the community.

The questionnaire is anonymous and will take about 10 minutes to complete. All details at the bottom of the group's home page.
