ACME WG survey - 15 Nov

Details
Published: Monday, 21 October 2019 17:36

ACMEThe recently formed Arctic Cryosphere Change and Coastal Marine Ecosystems (ACME) working group is collecting community perspectives on the current state and future directions of Arctic coastal paleoceanography via an online survey.

ACME strongly encourages community members and paleoceanographers of all career stages and backgrounds to respond to the short questionnaire by 15 November.

The results of the survey will provide a basis for outlining priority research questions and directions, and give an overview of spatial, methodological, and ecological knowledge gaps identified by the community.

The questionnaire is anonymous and will take about 10 minutes to complete. All details at the bottom of the group's home page.

ECN logoThe latest PAGES Early-Career Network (ECN) webinar "How to successfully publish a scientific paper" is now available on its YouTube Channel.

Presented by Professor Thierry Corrège, current editor of the journal Palaeoceanography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, this webinar explains, among many things, the acceptance process, peer reviewing, and tips on writing a good manuscript (using the IMRAD format).

Access the webinar here. All ECN webinars are available here.

PaCTS, PAGES and paleodata

Details
Published: Thursday, 05 September 2019 12:16

palo.v34.7.coverThe first version of a crowdsourced reporting standard for paleoclimate data has been discussed in a new Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology paper.

PAGES involvement, via our working groups and workshops, in the Paleoclimate Community reporTing Standards (PaCTS) project is highlighted in the "PaCTS 1.0: A Crowdsourced Reporting Standard for Paleoclimate Data" paper, written by Deborah Khider et al.

PaCTS captures which information should be included when reporting paleoclimate data, with the goal of maximizing the reuse value of paleoclimate datasets, particularly for synthesis work and comparison to climate model simulations. Initiated by the LinkedEarth project, the process to elicit a reporting standard involved an international workshop in 2016, various forms of digital community engagement over the next few years, and grassroots working groups.

PaCTS addresses the acute need for standardizing paleoclimate datasets to minimize "data wrangling", which is estimated to consume up to 80% of researcher time in some scientific fields.

The standards help meet the interoperability and reuse criteria and of FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), of which PAGES is an early signatory.
