IPCC AR6 WGII extensions

Details
Published: Monday, 04 May 2020 12:40

ipccWorking Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which assesses scientific literature relating to impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability, has revised the timeline for preparing its contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) because of disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Authors of IPCC reports volunteer their time and expertise. A survey by Working Group II found that its authors are experiencing unique and sustained challenges in the wake of COVID-19. Their ability to deliver to the original timeline has been compromised by competing responsibilities, limited resources and diverse personal challenges.

In light of these challenges, Working Group II is extending a number of milestones due to be reached in 2020 by around four months. The cut-off date for scientific literature to be submitted for publication, if it is to be included in the assessment, moves to 1 November 2020. The government and expert review of the report’s Second Order Draft will now take place between 4 December 2020 and 29 January 2021. The Fourth Lead Author Meeting to prepare the final draft will now be held in March 2021.

The PAGES Early-Career Award

Details
Published: Thursday, 30 April 2020 11:35

PAGESpgc cmyk transPAGES is pleased to announce a biennial Early-Career Award (ECA) for excellence in collaborative scholarship, including research, communication, outreach, leadership, networking, community service, and international collaboration.

The PAGES ECA honors people in the early stages of their career for their engagement both within and beyond the scientific community, for example through (though not limited to) involvement in science coordination, outreach, networking, leadership activities, development of international collaborations and for excellence in research in support of PAGES' goals.

The first Award will be publicly presented by PAGES at the next Open Science Meeting (OSM) to be held in Agadir, Morocco, in May 2021.

Nominations close 30 September 2020.

Holocene dust special issue

Details
Published: Wednesday, 29 April 2020 14:13

hola 30 4coverPAGES' former working group Dust Impact on Climate and Environment (DICE) has released the special issue "Holocene Dust Dynamics" in The Holocene.

Guest edited by François De Vleeschouwer, Jan-Berend Stuut, and Fabrice Lambert, the special issue contains nine papers which aim to contribute to a better understanding of the role of dust aerosols.

The articles analyse the evolution and climatic impact of atmospheric dust over long and short timescales within the Holocene in various regions.

It is a partial outcome of discussions held at the group workshop at Las Cruces, Chile, in January 2018.

ENSO and SAM reconstructions

Details
Published: Monday, 27 April 2020 13:47

cp 16 743 2020 avatar web apr 20PAGES' 2k Network data have been used in a new Climate of the Past paper by Christoph Dätwyler et al. "Teleconnections and relationship between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) in reconstructions and models over the past millennium".

The climate of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) is strongly influenced by ENSO and SAM variations. Because of the limited length of instrumental records in most parts of the SH, very little is known about the relationship between these two key modes of variability over time.

Using proxy-based reconstructions and last-millennium climate model simulations, authors find that ENSO and SAM indices are mostly negatively correlated over the past millennium. Pseudo-proxy experiments indicate that currently available proxy records are able to reliably capture ENSO–SAM relationships back to at least 1600 CE.

Paleoclimate-records database

Details
Published: Thursday, 16 April 2020 09:14

sci data apr 20 dk figIn the new Scientific Data paper "A global database of Holocene paleotemperature records" by Darrell Kaufman et al., authors present a global compilation of quality-controlled, published, temperature-sensitive proxy records extending back 12,000 years through the Holocene.

This database helps place recent warming into the longer-term context of natural climate variability.

Data were compiled from 679 sites where time series cover at least 4000 years and derive from lake sediment (51%), marine sediment (31%), peat (11%), glacier ice (3%), and other natural archives.

The database contains 1319 records, including 157 from the Southern Hemisphere.

PAGES provided additional support for workshops leading up to this data product.
